Disney’s Newsies
Encore's fall quarter was bustling with activity, headlined by our production of Disney's Newsies. Under the exceptional direction of Britannia Howe, a seasoned professional with extensive theatrical and educational background, our young performers thrived. Danielle Lydia Sheather, our talented choreographer, and Jacob Lee, the Music director, brought their expertise to enhance the production.
We couldn't be prouder of our remarkable cast for tackling this challenging production with such grace and determination. Newsies is no easy feat, yet they all exceeded expectations.
Please take a moment to read the following message from our director:
Young people are paying attention; and they deserve a seat at the table. The youth of our country are succeeding as the engines of change on issues that affect them directly. Walt Disney Pictures brought the Newsie story to the big screen in 1992 as Newsies, a musical comedy drama, based on the real -life story of newsboys strike. As a young girl I would watch Newsies on VHS, I remember Christian Bale dancing in the dirt and I, too, dreamed of life in the west. As an adult who has now experienced the broadway musical version, I appreciate more of the characters. Katherine, a quick witted writer who uses her words as weapons for change. Davey, the nurturing older brother. Spot Conlin, the small in stature but dynamic leader of Brooklyn, and Medda, who shares her time space for those in need, to name a few.
The newsboy’s strike may have been at the turn of the century but it doesn’t feel far away. The way these young people stand up and say, “Listen to me!” is happening in 2023 all across the globe. I’m proud of these young artists who embody this story. This musical is about kids after all, and who better to tell it? I firmly believe we are all better for the efforts of these brave teenagers across America who, like the newsies of 125 years ago, are teaching us adults a thing or two.
