A Masterclass in Storytelling: Rhett Guter and Rio LeFevre Join Les Mis Cast for a Transformative Workshop
This past week, Encore Performing Arts’ Les Misérables cast stepped away from their usual rehearsal routine for something truly special—a masterclass-style workshop led by Encore Artistic Director Rhett Guter and newcomer to the Encore family, Rio LeFevre. The experience offered the cast a deeper look at storytelling from two accomplished artists and educators, and provided fresh energy to the production process.
Under the skillful direction of Randy Sly, the cast has been building a powerful version of Les Mis. The workshop added an extra layer of insight. Rhett walked the performers through his personal acting approach, focusing on the idea that every new thought is an argument. He helped the cast break down scenes moment by moment, emphasizing point of view, intention, and the internal logic behind each line of text. It was a powerful reminder that great acting begins with clear thinking and emotional truth.
Rhett Guter is no stranger to the stage or the rehearsal room. A nationally recognized actor, director, and choreographer, Rhett has appeared in and helmed productions across the country. His performance credits include roles in West Side Story, Oklahoma!, 42nd Street, and South Pacific at major venues such as the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and American Conservatory Theater. He is a graduate of the University of Utah’s Musical Theatre Program and has earned acclaim for his ability to bring precision, humanity, and insight to every project. His blend of professional experience and approachable mentorship made this workshop a standout moment in the rehearsal process.
Alongside Rhett, Rio LeFevre offered an equally impactful perspective—this time through movement. In a session focused on dance and physical storytelling, Rio invited the cast to explore how the body can communicate ideas, emotion, and character even before a word is spoken. She led exercises designed to connect intention with movement and challenged the performers to use space, shape, and breath to amplify their roles. Her warmth and clarity quickly earned the trust of the cast, and her presence elevated the artistic conversation in the room.
Rio brings a rich background in youth theater and performance education. She has choreographed and directed productions such as Tarzan, Jungle Book Jr., and Annie Jr., and served as an educational programmer for ArtFUSION at Southern Utah University and as a Playteam Educator for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Her onstage credits include The Drowsy Chaperone, Dracula, Frankenstein, Clue, and Lewis Loves Clark. She holds a degree in Theatre, Science, and Education from Southern Utah University and continues to make a mark as both an artist and educator.
This collaborative workshop was more than a break from routine—it was a meaningful deep dive into the craft of storytelling. We’re so grateful to Rhett and Rio for lending their expertise, and to Director Randy Sly for creating space in the process for growth and exploration.
