Youth Director - Gabbie Bowler

Director Gabbie Bowler

It was a privilege to direct Encore!’s most recent theater camp - Dare to Dream.

The process was one of creation, teamwork, inspiration, and hard work, and I loved every second of it!

Step 1 - Creation

For this camp, we had a new creative process because instead of using songs from only one musical, like Lion King or Encanto, we chose a theme and were able to pull songs from many different musicals. I was inspired by the song from Tangled, I’ve Got A Dream. I love this song and felt that it portrayed an inspiring message. So with the help of my talented Co-director, Jonas, we decided to go for it and call it Dare to Dream. From there, we searched for other songs that would complement, provide variety and musical interest, and challenge the young performers! We were able to pick a selection of songs and create a script full of solos, quotes, songs, duets, and dreams with the help of our amazing Music Director, Alicia!

Step 2 - Pre-Production

Once the script was in motion we were able to meet the youth leadership team! As soon as we were all in the same room, we knew this would be the “dream” team! Each individual brought something to the table, whether that was musical ability, tech understanding, or just genuine love for the young performers. So before camp, we met as a team several times to share our vision for the camp and the show and to receive leadership training through this amazing Encore program!

Step 3 - Camp Rehearsals

During the next 5 days of camp, the young performers learned their solos, music, and dances under the direction of our beautiful choreographer, Haven! We talked about our dreams and what it means to achieve them! My vision for the show was coming together, the pieces were falling into place!

Step 4 - Performance

The lights were on, the music was rolling, and the audience was cheering! I could not be more proud of my team and the young performers. Each person on the team had a job and fulfilled it well, including running all the tech, guiding performers backstage, and communicating with each other! And it was something truly special to watch each of the young performers share their dreams through dance, singing, and spoken lines! They inspired me to keep working hard and find joy in the little moments!

I was deeply honored to have this opportunity to work with these incredible homeschoolers in this Encore youth leadership program!  My dream was fulfilled and I hope to do it again in the future!
